Bath Wanderers 2nd XI vs Beckington

Thankfully, despite a shower or two towards the end of the match, the rain stayed away and the Wanderers 2XI were able to chalk up their first win of the season, against Beckington in the Somerset League. We won the toss and opted to bat, getting off to a great start, with 19 off the first two overs, however this was short lived with three wickets falling in the third over, due to some very accurate bowling. The recovery was lead by Jess Bailey (38 retired), supported by Catptain, Kym Hanscomb, who saw off Beckington’s best bowlers, whilst taking advantage of extras and fielding mistakes to add to the run total. Eva Lynch joined the fray in the 16th over, rapidly reaching 15, whilst Lola Harris managed a quick 7 with two overs to go, ending the Wanderers innings on 148-5. The highest scorer was, unfortunately, extras: 77 in total, however our bats women made the most of the good balls.

When Beckington took to the field they struggled to score fluently, with the Wanderers bowling attack taking regular wickets; top wicket taker was Katy Hanscomb with figures of 3-1-6-2, including a caught and bowled. Lola Harris took a corker of a wicket, bowling S Leicester around her legs, whilst Jess Bailey, Paula Smith and Jess Smith each took one wicket a piece. Matilda Jackson, keeping wicket, brought about a run out, following a snappy pick-up and throw from Sophie Godman. Fielding throughout was tight, with Beckington only managing to score 38 from the bat. Again, extras were the top scorer, with 43. Beckington completed their 20 overs on 81-7.

Mention must also be given to our three youngest players, Matilda Jackson, who kept wicket admirably, having to deal with the low bounce, fast and spin bowling. Whilst Eleanor Burn and Isla Cory both fielded excellently and bowled two overs each: Eleanor’s figures after her overs were a cracking 2-1-2-0. Isla had the daunting task of bowling the last over, but she kept her nerve, with figures of 2-0-19-0. We look forward to seeing them playing for the Wanderers in future matches.

An enjoyable match, with a great group of players. Here’s to the next outing against Chippenham on Friday 15th June.
