Bath 307-5 Brain 110 Muchall 88

Werrington 223 all out Ackland 5-40

Result - Bath 1st XI Won by 84 runs

When you think of pre-season games in April most players will think of a cold, wet, dark day followed by a swinging/seaming ball and bruised finger ends..... April the 8th 2017 was far from that! Mid 20's, not a cloud in the sky and a track that look liked the WACA (didn't play like it mind!?).

A few new faces in the side - Ben Ackland and Paul Muchall making their Bath debuts whilst Tom Hankins has rejoined the club. We were also helped out by Charley Reed a young wicket keeper from KES Bath (who did a great job - Thanks Charley!)

We decided to have a bat first and from the go we were into our stride showing all the hard work we've all put in during the winter. One of mine and Muchy's key messages has been to back yourself fully and take opportunities when you get them.... Charlie Brain a fantastic example of this! A confident and mature innings. After seeing off the new ball Charlie started to open up and show why he is one of the brightest young talents in the club. Charlie was supported well by Paul Muchall who 'chipped' the ball to all parts giving the innings some real momentum. Once Charlie was finally dismissed Ben Ackland took up from where Charlie left off and showed he has every shot in the locker and can play them from ball 1! A very solid first half performance showcasing our maturity to build an innings and our striking ability when required.

The second half also went to plan and bowlers were able to implement skills they have practiced indoors. The pitch offered very little for the bowlers and at one stage the run chase looked on. A wicket for last year's leading wicket taker in the club Harry Hankins got us going and wickets then began to fall at regular intervals. Pressure was applied through tight spells from the seasoned pro Adam Kelly and new singing Paul Muchall. Ben Ackland then stepped up to bowl his off spin which the opposition couldn't resist having a crack at leading to several great catches in the deep! The fielding was impressive for the first game with every catching opportunity being taken. All in all a very impressive start with a lot of guys taking their opportunities. Selection headaches await!

Look forward to seeing some more of those skills when we take on Glos/Ireland in the T20's in 2 weeks time. Keep working hard guys!
