Job Description:

The primary role is to help to provide high quality playing and practice grass pitches at North Parade ground and playing pitches at Brownsword ground in a timely way. Contribute to improvements in pitch quality and overall playing and practice conditions, to help attain a high standard of general appearance of the grounds and surrounds, and to contribute to an overall cost effective cricket operation. An additional role is that of car park supervisor(off-season).

Job Responsibilities: As directed by the Head Groundsman:

Match and Practice

·       Help to prepare match and practice pitches to a high standard and on a timely basis.

·       Ensure boundaries are marked, match/practice equipment and spares are available and safety and other relevant netting is in place as appropriate.

·       Ensure match pitch is marked and post-match running repairs and protection of the square are carried out as required.

·       Ensure as required that appropriate covering of pitches and safe positioning of covers when not in use.



·       Contribute to good communication on all grounds and surrounds issues.


·       Contribute to improved productivity of ground activities and better use of cricket facilities.

·       Always ensure machinery/equipment is safe and adopt working practices which meet acceptable health and safety standards and regulations.  Help maintain secure, safe, clean and tidy workshop, storage and working areas at all times.

·       Help maintain good relationships with outside contractors and suppliers.

·       Assist with arranging consumables, machinery and equipment purchase, and machinery service.

·       Maintenance of ground surrounds

·       Car park supervision (off season only)




·       Ensure good appearance and safe condition of vegetation areas as required.

·       Help to ensure all cricket support equipment (sight-screens, scoreboard, netting, etc.) are repaired and maintained, and stored safely and securely as appropriate.

·       Implement maintenance tasks as specified by Head Groundsman.

 Planning & Development

·       Seek to adopt best practice and improve continuously own groundsmanship expertise by training and awareness of technical developments.

·       Help to devise and implement a preparation and renovation programme to improve the     squares towards true and predictable performance for the duration of matches.

·       Help to devise and implement a programme to improve the outfields and the artificial and grass practice wickets to the highest standard.

Car Park Supervision (off season)

·       The main focus of the job is the effective and courteous supervision of Pay and Display customers in the North Parade car park and maintenance of the car park & general appearance and tidiness.

·       Ensure as far as possible correct parking by customers

·       Carry out a minimum of three x 30 minute car park patrols each working day

·       Conduct occasional non-routine car park patrols at unusual times

·       Be on duty from time to time during busy periods as agreed (e.g. Bath Rugby matches)

·       Carry out litter collections of surrounds of buildings and grounds

·       Carry our regular internal cleaning and tidying of Brownsword pavilion, indoor school and Old Pavilion


Candidate Profile:

You will enjoy working outdoors, with the challenge of maintaining high quality cricket pitches playing surfaces that can support heavy use. You will be flexible, approachable and a good team worker, self-motivated and keen to learn through a professional development programme.

You will have or be willing to gain:

• Minimum of NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Sports Turf Maintenance and/or Horticulture

• A valid driving licence

• Machinery competence (tractors, mowers, cultivators)

• Formal training in manual handling

• Awareness of Health and Safety Legislation

• Pesticide certification



Terms and Conditions

The job is full time, 37.5 hours per week. Flexible hours are required, including Sunday work in the cricket season.

Salary up to £17,500 - £20,000 depending on skills and experience.
