Bath CC 1st XI v Downend CC 1st XI
Bath CC 1st XI recorded a convincing 180 run home win against Downend CC 1st XI on Saturday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bath lost Jack Scrivens (5) early to leave the home side 9-1, and although there was a brief second wicket partnership to move the score past 30, Ben Church (9) soon followed to leave Bath 37-2. This brought the in form Sam Young to the wicket and he batted sensibly with opener Brad Porteous who recorded a run-a-ball half century before he went for 51. Young then batted effectively with Harry Ellison (26) but when James Arney came to the crease there was still a lot of work to do to post a defendable score. But Young and Arney proved they were up to the task, adding 150 for the fifth wicket, as Young posted another excellent century, falling towards the end of the innings for 107 and Arney ended the innings 65 not out off just 56 balls as Bath finished on 298-5 from their 50 overs.
Downend’s reply started very brightly reaching 59 without lost in the 12th over when the introduction of Spencer Gammon to the attack claimed the wicket of Masoor Khan for 32. This wicket sparked a devastating collapse as Gammon picked up a hattrick and Downend lost six wickets for just seven runs as five batters went without troubling the scoreboard. Although the lower order briefly fought back to take the away sides total passed 100, in the end Downend were bowled out in the 27th over for just 118 for Bath to win by 180 runs. The pick of the Bath bowlers were George Axtell (5-24) and Spencer Gammon (3-25). Bath have moved up to third place in Premier One after this win.
