Bath CC 1st XI v Potterne 1st XI
Bath CC 1st XI played Potterne, one of their closest Premier One rivals at North Parade on Saturday. After Harry Ellison won the toss and elected to bat first, Bath slumped to 53-6 on a wicket that was offering considerable lateral movement to the seamers. But just when Bath needed someone to step up and bat through the innings, Sam Young delivered with one of his most mature innings for the club, steadily rebuilding and batting effectively with the tale as he finished undefeated on 115 not out, as Bath were bowled out for 197.
Potterne’s reply got off to a very positive start, with the opening partnership swiftly passing 50, but the introduction of George Axtell to the attack completely changed momentum as he removed Potterne’s top four batters in a spell of 4-31. With the away side 111-4 with only 87 required for victory, the match was nicely poised. But as Potterne inched closer to their target the combination of James Arney (3-42) and Spencer Gammon (3-14) took six wickets for just 24 runs, bowling the away side out for 162, still 26 runs short of victory. Bath 1st XI picked up the maximum 20 points to remain joint top of Premier One with Frocester CC.
