Bath CC 1st XI v Potterne CC 1st XI – ECB National Club Championship (Round 3)

Bath 1st XI put in a strong performance against Potterne 1st XI to progress to the next round of the ECB National Club Championship.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Bath’s batters got off to their best start of the season in all forms of cricket, as Australian all-rounder Aidan Cahill rewarded his captain’s decision to move him to the top of the order, with one of the most destructive inningsseen at North Parade. Cahill and opening partner, Jack Scrivens raced to 127 for no wicket off just 14 oversbefore Scrivens went for 54. Cahill went on to record his maiden century for the club off just 64 balls, with eight sixes. When Cahill eventually fell for 113, Bath lost three quick wickets, but Harry Ellison steadied the ship with a run a ball 46, and with the help of the lower order he took the home side up to a commanding 290-9 from their 40 overs.

Potterne’s response started aggressively, but Cahill’s pace once again proved invaluable as he removed two batters, both caught trying to hook to leave the away side 41-2. This soon became 55-3 when Joe Heywood bowled Tahir Afridi (22) in his first over. Although Omar Akram (26), Basil Akram (57), and Chris Aubrey (50) all batted well, keeping up with a run rate in excess of ten runs an over proved too much for the Wiltshire side, asCahill (4-44) picked up two further wickets, andHeywood (5-33) returned to claim four wickets to pick up his second five wicket haul of the weekend. In so doing, Bath had bowled out Potterne for 228, 55 runs short of their total to progress to the next round.
