Bath CC 1st XI v Potterne CC 1st XI
Bath 1st XI travelled to The Grove in Wiltshire to play Potterne CC 1st XI on Saturday.
After winning the toss and choosing to put Potterne into bat, the home side started positively before opening pace bowler, Aidan Cahill struck by removing Basil Akram (15) to leave Potterne 32-1. Fellow opener, Jake Goodwin and number three, Josh Kelly (43) then put on over 100 for the second wicket before skipper Tim Rouse trapped Kelly in front. Lasith Abeyrathne then hit a rapid 37 to help Goodwin put on 59 to leave Potterne on 202-3 with 12 overs still left in the innings. As the lower order made solid contributions, seamer Matthew Cadywould (3-45) returned to first pick up the important wicket of Goodwin for 84, and then two more wickets to combine well with James Arney (2-37) to bowl Potterne out for 265 in 48 overs. Potterne lost their last seven wickets for just 63 runs.
Bath’s reply stuttered as they slipped to 36-3. The prize wicket of Sam Young (22) was then taken to leave the away side 60-4, and although Harry Ellison (13) soon followed, skipper Tim Rouse and Charlie Brain then combined well to rebuild the Bath innings, adding 77 before Rouse (51) went for an important half century. Brain continued to bat effectively with Arney as the pair put on 55 before Brain went for 77. Arney (31) took Bath very close before he skied a short ball to leave Bath still 12 runs short at 252-8. Spencer Gammon (16) and Louis Brown (10) then were within touching distance of victory with just two runs to win of two overs, but Omar Akram (3-35) trapped both batters in front to take Potterne to a 1 run win as Bath were bowled out for 263 agonisingly close to victory. Bath remain in second place in Premier One, just five points behind Bridgwater CC 1st XI.
