Bath CC 2nd XI hosted Stapleton CC 1st XI on Saturday in a match which proved to be one of the closest finishes of the season.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Stapleton lost both openers with just 37 on the board. But then Babar Pervaiz (55) and Alfie Lewis (47) built a 62 run partnership, and contributions from down the order from Ruben Janse Vuuren (21) and Ashley Birkinshaw (44) took the away side past 200 before Stapleton were eventually bowled out for 225 in the 44th over. Josh Sutton (3-25) and Harry Allen (3-30) were the pick of the bowlers.
Bath’s reply started brightly before Ishwar Suresh (24) was bowled. Joe Weare (16) and Mike Staves (0) soon followed to leave the home side 43-3. Despite losing their skipper Charlie Rustell for 18, solid contributions from Feddie Stappard (31), Ross Newman (42) and Rhys Baker (49) took Bath very close and when Baker was the ninth wicket to fall, the score was 218-9 with just 8 runs required to win, with one wicket in hand. But in the very next over Babar Pervaiz (4-36) bowled Mo Hamza (3) to win the match by just 4 runs. Despite this loss, Bath 2nd XI remain top of the Senior Division with a 28 point lead.
