Bath CC 3rd XI v Old Down CC 1st XI

Bath CC 3rd XI recorded their second very tight victory in a row against Old Down CC 1st XI on Saturday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bath lost opener, Luke Stringer (5) early, but fellow opener Tom Eves batted effectively first with Sam Simmons (12) and then with skipper George Axtell. Eves and Axtell amassed a 110 run partnership to take Bath up to 157-3 before Eves went for 70. Axtell soon followed for 55, and with some strong batting from the lower order, Bath ended up 190-6 from their 40 overs.

Old Down swiftly fell to 14-1 in reply as Chloe Micklethwaite bowled Max Curtis for 4. As Duncan Boffin acted as the anchor to Old Down’s innings, wickets continued to fall through the pace of Ed Shepherdson and Luke Welsh, and at 68-5 the match was nicely in the balance. Pullin (14) then ably supported Boffin to add 53, but the introduction of Mathan Balasubramaniyan to the attack started an exciting period of play, as he clean bowled three Old Down batters in his first over as the home slide slipped to 135-8. However, this brought Josh Little to the crease, who then smashed 36 in just 12 balls before Balasubramaniyan (4-36) also picked up his wicket to leave Old Down requiring 10 runs to win in six overs with just one wicket in hand. As Welsh (3-11) returned to the attack, only 6 runs were required, but he clean bowled Ben Riggs with his first ball to win the match for Bath. Boffin remained stranded on 51 not out. This is Bath 3rd’s sixth win a row, to take them up to third in the B&D Second Division.
