Girls Sabres v Keynsham A

Captain Emily Franklin-Adams won the toss and elected to bowl first. From the first couple of overs it was apparent that the opening batters were very quick between the wickets, taking every opportunity they could to run.

Although nice and straight lines were being bowled, the batters were building a strong run rate from the start. This opening partnership was broken by Josefa with her first of 2 run outs during her bowling spell. This created the opportunity for the girls to put the pressure back on.

One wicket inevitably brought two. With partnerships being broken before the batters could properly settle in. After the first 10 overs, the girls were looking much sharper in the field and really were backing each other up and trying hard to stop the many shots that were hit around the ground.

Although the run rate was still pretty high, the girls didn’t give up. Excellent bowling in the middle spells from the likes of Clara, Lily and Catherine with a total of 2 wickets taken between them. The captain Emily then came on the bowl in the final overs and skittled the tail end. Taking 4-2 off 2 overs. They finished on 142-9.

Winnie and Alice opened the batting and started off well with positive running between the wickets. Unfortunately a full toss in the 2nd over saw Winnie depart and in came Emily F-A. Alice and Emily batted very positively together, creating over a 50 partnership between them. Clear calling and fast running between the wickets were able to put pressure on Keynsham. Lots of boundaries hit between them, this helped the run rate get close to that of the opposition. Unfortunately an LBW dismissal saw the end of the Captain- departing on 30.

In came Clara and she helped support Alice with only a few overs to go. The pair rotated the strike excellently and helped keep the runs adding up even up until the last ball. Sadly the girls were just 14 runs short of the boys’ total, but Alice has managed to bat the entire innings finishing on 61*. A first for me to witness as Sabres coach.

I am very proud of the girls’ performances. Each and everyone of them played a valuable role- whether that be in the field, bowling, keeping or batting. The positivity from the girls is infectious and I can’t wait for more games. This was the best batting performance I’ve ever seen done by the girls. It’s a treat to be able to see all the other girls take on the different teams each week, with them always being better than they were the week before.
